FHS CLASS CREATES “LITTLE LIBRARIES” As part of a community service project, Mr. John New’s Advisory Class at FHS decided to create two mini-libraries for the communities of Sylvia and Turon. Little Libraries are a “take a book, return a book” free book exchange. Anyone can take a book or bring a book to share with their community. There is an understanding that real people are sharing their favorite books with their friends and neighbors. Mr. New’s Advisory Class has been working on the project this semester with the goal to complete the project before the school year ends. They began construction using two wooden crates with doors. They had lots of sanding to do and also needed to line the crates on the inside. The students painted the outside of the boxes a forest green color and made plexiglass windows for the doors. They put shingles on the roof and used cedar supports and plywood platforms with the posts. Students suggested the city parks as a great and safe location for the libraries, and communicated with the Sylvia and Turon mayors, Mike Pugh and Linda Brown. Both mayors have accepted the libraries for their towns and will oversee installation once the libraries are delivered. The Advisory Class Members who took part in this project are Centhiyah Bankston, Aubrey Brown, Morgan Gaston, Kyle Haskins, Brodie Snodgrass, Lucy Steen, and Zoe Stringos. The students and Mr. New would like to thank the following people for their donations and support of this project: Mary Beth Fulk (use to shop and tools); Tim McKinney (shingles); Custodial Staff (helping with logistics for painting); Kevin Ingalls (technical support); Kyle Haskins’ Family (wooden crates with doors); and Mrs. Mathes/Mrs. McKinney (support and encouragement.)
