The Kansas Board of Regents just passed into law a new scholarship act called the Kansas Promise Act. This is very important for those of you planning to attend a public community college or a technical school. There are a few requirements attached to it, the first of which is choosing an eligible program of study (information technology & security, mental & physical healthcare, advanced manufacturing & building trades, and early childhood education & development.) You must also then sign an agreement to live and work in Kansas for two years following your college graduation. This scholarship will cover the cost of tuition, books, fees, and required materials, after you've applied any other scholarships or financial aid. This is available to graduates of the CLASS of 2021 and will be available for the graduating seniors for the next several years. So, if you are going to attend a community college or technical school, you should really look at this, because you could go to school for FREE, if you are willing to stay in Kansas for 2 years following college graduation. KDHE Mobile Hepatitis and COVID Vaccination Lab Is Returning to Hutchinson; Get Bonus $15 Applebee’s Meal Coupon for Vaccinating Reno County, Kan.- July 8, 2021- KDHE’s mobile lab will be back in Hutchinson for the next four Wednesdays to administer COVID-19 and Hepatitis A vaccines, along with rapid COVID testing. The first 30 individuals to receive a vaccine each day will be given a $15 meal coupon for Applebee’s in Hutchinson. No appointment is needed, limit one coupon a month. The lab will be set up at the Salvation Army, 700 N. Walnut Street, Hutchinson, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on July 14, 21, 28 and August 4. All services are free and confidential. “We are excited to team up with the Thrive Corporation to offer a meal at Applebee’s,” said Reno County Health Department Director Karla Nichols. “COVID is still a threat in our community, especially with the rise of Delta variant cases in Kansas. Vaccinating is still the best line of defense we have right now.” Reno County also saw a rise of Hepatitis A cases this spring. Hepatitis A is a vaccine-preventable liver infection caused by the hepatitis A Virus (HAV). The virus is usually spread through close personal contact with an infected person or through eating contaminated food or drink. Common symptoms of the disease include jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), dark urine, stomach pain, nausea and vomiting, and fever. The best way to prevent hepatitis A is to be vaccinated with the full, two-dose series. The Health Department, at 209 W. Second, is also accepting walk-ins for COVID-19 vaccines during their normal operating hours. The vaccine is free to any Reno County resident, regardless of citizen status or insurance. Those who receive their vaccine at the Health Department before July 14 will receive a coupon for a Buy One Get One Free show at the Fox Theatre, or a free ice cream cone coupon for Spangles or Bogey’s. For more information, visit www.renogov.org/741/COVID-19 or call 620-694-2900. For a ride to one of the clinics, call RCAT at 620-694-2913.

SUNFLOWER SUMMER PROGRAM PROVIDES FREE FAMILY FIELD TRIPS: Families can download an app to begin educational adventures across Kansas TOPEKA — A new program will help children stay engaged in learning throughout the summer months while spending quality time with family members and friends touring some of Kansas’ greatest attractions – all for free. The Sunflower Summer program, which is being funded by federal COVID-19 money to offer summer enrichment activities for Kansas students, is a collaboration between the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE), Kansas Department of Commerce, the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism, Kansas Children’s Cabinet and Trust Fund, KU Center for Public Partnerships and Research, and Greenbush Education Service Center. “This is a win-win for Kansas students and Kansas attractions,” said Commissioner of Education Dr. Randy Watson. “The Sunflower Summer program can help enrich summer learning and is an excellent opportunity for students and families to go on educational adventures together while supporting nearly 70 Kansas attractions.” Adults can visit sunflowersummer.org to download the Sunflower Summer mobile app to their phone or tablet device. The app is currently available in the Apple App Store. However, the app isn’t available yet in Google Play because of delays in the Google review process. Android users can still utilize the program by filling out a paper form upon arrival at venues. Once Google accepts the app into the Play Store, KSDE will send out a notification. An adult will need to register their family members and include their county and school district. There are nearly 70 attractions to choose from across the state, including zoos, museums, historic landmarks, libraries and outdoor locations. Within the Sunflower Summer app is a passport that allows participants to track where they have visited on their adventures. Once a location has been selected, tickets can be claimed within the app. When attendees are ready to enter, the ticket can be activated and presented to the ticket taker. Child care facilities also can access and use the app for field trips. However, only one ticket per child and adult can be redeemed at each location. More information and a frequently-asked-questions section are available at www.sunflowersummer.org. The Sunflower Summer program runs through Aug. 15. Funding for this program is limited, and tickets are on a first-come, first-served basis.
