We will be in the RED Zone next week because of the new numbers in Reno County: 259 non-prisoner new, active cases and a Positive Test Rate of 18.9%, for the last 14 days. We expected this to happen based on last week’s numbers, so the BOE discussed and helped plan what would happen this week with our school district, if we continued to NOT instances of cases on our campus. Here is our plan for next week: 1. All PK-12 students can attend classes on campus ONLY if we keep our students in small, cohort groups. That means that even middle and high schoolers stay with the same small group of students all day. They do not intermingle and do not change classrooms. We did this at FMS and FHS this past week as part of our modified orange. This also means that there will be some rearranging of students in FES classes that are too large. That is being worked on right now. 2. All students will eat lunch in their classrooms, with the exception of Pre-K and Kindergarten. Pre-K will spread out in the cafeteria to eat, while Kindergarten students will eat in the concessions area. 3. There will be no spectators for sports next week. Fortunately we do not have many home games left, but there is a home FHS football game scheduled on Friday, October 23rd. We will broadcast that game for you online, but there will be no spectators allowed on campus. We apologize for the inconvenience, but this is being done for safety reasons and to allow the student athletes to play. 4. Sports activities and practices will continue, but only active participants may travel to away games. 5. We will follow the rules of the schools we visit for away games. If they allow spectators, you will be able to attend. We will post details on our social media to inform you. 6. There will continue to be NO AFTER-SCHOOL program. The majority of our parents and patrons have been supportive, and we can’t thank you enough for helping us through this challenging time. We remain committed to educating children on campus, as long as it is safe to do so. We remain committed to keeping you informed and to being transparent as to what is happening. As of today, we have no positive case among our staff and students, but that could easily change. We will do our best to keep you updated.

HUTCHINSON – Ad Astra Radio is proud to announce a new bi-weekly award to recognize our classroom teachers. The Classroom Hero Award seeks to highlight the hard work and dedication of those teaching on the frontlines in our local schools. With the added stresses of the COVID-19 pandemic and remote learning, we wanted to find a way to highlight the great work our classroom teachers are doing, and to let them know how much they’re appreciated,” said Aaron West, Ad Astra Radio Operations Manager. “We’re thrilled to announce the Classroom Hero Award.” Every two weeks, a new teacher will be randomly selected, from community submissions, to receive the award, along with a gift card and gift basket. Ad Astra Radio has included several community partners in hopes of making the presentation extra special. Thank you to Heartland Credit Union, Midway Motors, and Stutzman’s Greenhouse. “Heartland is proud to support the Classroom Hero program to honor local teachers,” said Dan Springer, HCU President and CEO. “Now, more than ever, our teachers deserve our respect and gratitude for all they do for our students.” Nominations are being accepted now at https://www.adastraradio.com/classroomhero. Listen for a winning teacher to be announced every two weeks, beginning Oct. 27, on Ad Astra Radio, and watch for frequent updates at https://www.facebook.com/adastraradiokansas.
