On February 24th, Fairfield Elementary School held their annual spelling bee. This year, the competition was divided into two age groups, 1st-2nd grades and 3rd-5th grades, at the elementary level and a third division at the middle school level, 6th-8th. Those students that placed 1st in each division qualified for the Reno County spelling bee, which will be held on February 17th at Reno Valley Middle school.

In the 1st-2nd grade group, we had 8 spellers that competed. Each of these students gained the ability to compete in the school wide event by placing in the top 4 of their classes. This year’s competitors were Cooper Eash, Dimitri Doda, Sawyer Padgett, Kendall Combs, Kashlyn Miller, Hayleigh Redenbaugh, Kinze Sieraen, and Will McReynolds. After many rounds of competition, Kendall Combs emerged as the winner and will represent the 1st and 2nd grade group at the Reno County Spelling Bee. Finishing in 2nd and 3rd place were Kashlyn Miller and Sawyer Padgett.

Following the 1st and 2nd grade spelling bee, we held our 3rd-5th grade competition. These students had to win entry into the spelling bee by once again being in the top four of their class. Contestants for this age group, included Jaxyn Miller, Landyn Schaffter, William Snelling, Christopher Zongker, Jaxon Haflich, Brooke Reau, Riley Zongker, Keziah Budy, Alex Wilt, Leena Arrick, Corvin McCormick, and Kynzie Lobban. In a competition that saw half of the competitors still in after 9 rounds, Landyn Schaffter prevailed as the champion and will move on to the Reno County Spelling bee competition. In second place was William Snelling and winning the tie breaker over Jaxon Haflich was Christopher Zongker finishing 3rd.
